For personalized clothing customization, there is no single machine that is the best; it depends on the current economic situation and customer needs of each individual case. When choosing equipment for personalized clothing customization, one should investigate the customer group, the desired product type, the main patterns, as well as one's own budget and the consumption capacity of the customer group to make the equipment selection.
I. Different equipment and their characteristics for clothing printing and suitable products
1. Embroidery Machine - Characteristics and suitable products for embroidery machine printing

Embroidery technique involves directly embroidering patterns onto clothing, creating real lines and three-dimensional textures. The finished product has strong three-dimensionality, good touch, high durability, and is ideal for brand logos. Clothing customization through embroidery is particularly suitable for polo shirts, hats, jackets, workwear, corporate clothing, and high-end clothing.
The disadvantage of embroidery clothing customization is that it is difficult to reproduce the effect of the picture. The limitation of the embroidery line color makes it impossible to achieve color gradation. Before embroidery the pattern, a layout needs to be made, which requires a high level of layout ability. Large areas of continuous embroidery will change the softness of the clothing.
2.Characteristics and suitable products for DTG

DTG is particularly suitable for small-batch production of cotton clothing; DTG directly prints ink onto the clothing, almost restoring the complex multi-color of the photo. It is particularly suitable for one-off orders, personal small-batch custom clothing orders. DTG printing has obvious disadvantages: DTG has high requirements for the material of the clothing, pre-treatment, and curing process. It performs poorly on water-repellent materials. For dark-colored clothing, white ink and pre-treatment are required. When placing an order, the fabric of the clothing needs to be known. If the curing effect of the ink is not good, the color will fade after washing.
3. DTF - Characteristics and application range of film transfer printing

DTF film transfer printing involves printing the pattern on a suitable PET film, then curing the hot melt adhesive powder on the film, and finally melting the hot melt adhesive powder with a heat press machine to transfer the pattern onto the clothing.
DTF is suitable for a wide range of transferable materials, including cotton, polyester, blended T-shirts, sweatshirts, sportswear, canvas bags, and more. It has excellent reproduction accuracy, color gradation, and detail presentation. Different patterns can be printed in a composite manner, supporting small-batch and multi-style orders. Orders mostly come from personalized T-shirts and custom accessories. It is particularly suitable for those just starting out.
The transfer products of DTF printing may form a certain film-like texture in the transfer area, resulting in reduced breathability, and cracking of the pattern when stretched significantly. The ink, glue powder, curing, and heat press parameters need to be strictly controlled to ensure stable product quality.
4. Screen Printing - Characteristics and application range of screen printing

Screen printing transfers ink onto clothing through a screen plate. Each color usually requires corresponding plate-making and color separation settings, making it a common process for large-scale production and bulk orders.
Screen printing has good breathability and a rich selection of inks. It is suitable for large-scale enterprise T-shirts, event wear, unified logos, and patterns with fewer color varieties.
Because screen printing requires separate plate-making for each color, it is not suitable for those with many color varieties and many gradient colors. When the production quantity is small, the plate-making cost is high. Therefore, screen printing is not suitable for personalized clothing customization but is more suitable for large-scale clothing production.
II. Equipment procurement strategies at different stages
1. Startup stage: Purchase one heat press machine at the startup stage

At the startup stage, one should invest at the minimum cost to verify the market and minimize the investment risk. The preferred method is to use the DTF membrane transfer printing. DTF has a wide range of applications.
The cost of the complete set of DTF production equipment is relatively high. Therefore, when we are not clear about the market demand in the early stage, we cannot blindly purchase the complete set of production equipment and consumables.
The specific approach is to first purchase a heat press machine and prepare a certain quantity of basic clothing. The DTF transfer printing film is purchased from other companies through the purchase of professional finished products. With a small investment, we can verify the market demand and develop the market. We can choose whether to increase equipment investment based on our own situation.
2. Expansion stage: Complete set of DTF printing equipment and consumables
After the exploration in the initial stage, it is understood that there is a demand in the market for the complete set of equipment production. Therefore, a complete set of DTF production equipment is equipped. The purpose is to master production capacity, production cost, and production efficiency for ourselves.
The complete set of DTF production equipment requires: DTF printer, powder shaking machine, heating furnace, heat press machine, as well as computers, design software, and necessary ventilation and electrical accessories.
The advantage of having a complete set of DTF equipment ourselves is: we can control the cost of the transfer printing film, improve the flexibility of delivery time, and undertake the work of custom pattern business. By producing the transfer printing film ourselves, we can reduce reliance on external purchases and further compress the unit cost and shorten the delivery cycle after the order is stable.
3. Market expansion and high value-added customization stage
The main feature of this stage is to increase the added value of products and the design and production capacity of personalized clothing. According to our own needs, computer embroidery machines and DTG printers are purchased. In terms of equipment investment, it emphasizes gradually increasing the number of workstations according to the actual order volume instead of purchasing all the equipment at once, so as to control the initial investment while steadily expanding production capacity as the business grows.
Computer embroidery machines can be used for customized production of high-end clothing. DTG can be used for more precise personalized clothing production.
4. Mass production stage
In this stage, production capacity needs to be further improved, production costs need to be reduced even more, and product quality needs to be more stable. This stage can purchase screen printing equipment. The characteristics of screen printing are more in line with the requirements of this stage.
Summary:
The embroidery machine, DTG, DTF and Screen Printing are respectively suitable for different types of orders. Among them, DTF has a wider application range. Embroidery is suitable for high-quality three-dimensional effects, DTG is suitable for directly printing colorful patterns on cotton garments, and screen printing is more suitable for mass production. In clothing customization and production, these devices are not in a competitive relationship but rather a complementary one. Therefore, when choosing these devices, we need to combine our actual production needs.
