DTF Printing Introduction

DTF Printing Introduction

1. What is DTF Printing?

DTF is the abbreviation of "Direct to Film". DTF printing involves processing the desired pattern using software first, and then printing the pattern onto a PET film using a DTF printer. After printing, sprinkle hot melt adhesive on the film, and then use a heat press machine to heat and press the pattern onto the surface of clothing, fabric, leather, etc.

2. Core Equipment and Consumables of DTF Printing

Currently, DTF cannot complete all the tasks with a single DTF Printer. Different equipment is needed to combine different materials to complete the process.

A complete DTF printing production system: DTF printer, powder dispenser, heat press machine, image processor software, and supporting consumables (transferring film, DTF ink, hot melt adhesive powder).

3. Process Flow of DTF Direct Inkjet Transfer Printing

The complete production process of DTF printing can generally be divided into the following 6 steps, in sequence: 1. Image processing 2. DTF Printer prints the image → Powder dispenser sprinkles hot melt adhesive powder → Heat press machine melts and solidifies the adhesive powder → Heat transfer machine heats and transfers the image → Remove the film covering the product

4. Applications of DTF Printing

DTF printing does not print on the fabric itself, but prints the pattern on a transfer film first, and then transfers it to the fabric through a heat press machine. Therefore, the requirements for the fabric in DTF heat transfer printing are not high. Almost all fabrics can be subjected to DTF transfer printing. Leather, PU leather, nylon waterproof fabric can all be directly transferred.

Compared to DTG printing and screen printing, DTF printing does not require pre-treatment for dark-colored fabrics. The color of the fabric itself has little impact on the color effect of the printed product.

And simple acrylic, plastic, metal materials can also be heat transferred, breaking through the traditional printing material restrictions.

Therefore, DTF printing is widely used in clothing customization, bags and various accessories, furniture textiles, small goods and promotional products.

5. Four Advantages of DTF Heat Transfer Printing

1. Can be used on almost all fabrics: DTF heat transfer printing is used for pure cotton, polyester, blended fabrics, nylon, canvas, denim, etc. Waterproof fabrics such as leather, PU leather, nylon waterproof fabric can be directly heat transferred,

2. No requirements for fabric color: Dark-colored clothes are colored with a double-layer structure of "color ink + white ink", no need for fabric pre-treatment, can print full-color gradients and fine patterns, and change the product only takes a few minutes.

3. Low cost for small quantities: The layout of DTF images is simple, easy to operate, and the time required for a single print is short; one can do the image layout themselves, without layout fees; there is no minimum production quantity limit for DTF printing, supporting single-piece or small-batch customization of multiple styles, and can print full-color gradients and fine patterns, changing the product only takes a few minutes,

4. Can pre-print heat transfer images: Merchants can predict potential best-selling products based on market conditions, print transfer films in advance to achieve inventory and flexible delivery, highly adaptable to POD e-commerce and small merchants' multi-category, small-batch production needs.

6. Disadvantages of DTF Heat Transfer Printing

1. High initial investment for the entire set of equipment: DTF printing is not done with a single machine. It requires a complete set of equipment. The initial investment for the entire set of equipment is high, and the daily operation and maintenance of more machines becomes complex and cumbersome. For example, white ink is prone to sedimentation and blockage, requiring daily maintenance.

2. The transplanted products of DTF have lower breathability and tensile strength: The DTF transfer process involves a layer of cured adhesive that is transferred along with the heat transfer and forms part of the final printed product.

For small-sized logos or detailed graphics, this effect may not be noticeable. However, large-scale solid-color prints may feel heavier or have poorer breathability compared to other decorative methods. On elastic fabrics, significant stretching of the fabric can cause the transferred images to crack.

3. The maintenance of the machinery is complex: DTF printing is a series of machines, and the machines require regular cleaning and maintenance on a daily basis. The maintenance required for multiple machines is even more extensive.
